Champaign-Urbana Weekend Planner January 4-6, 2019

It’s a new year, winter break is almost over, and baby, it’s cold outside!  Get out and have some fun this weekend in Champaign-Urbana. Almost all of these ideas are FREE!

Our weekend picks:

What: Winter Break Hours at the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center 
Where: Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center
When: Extended Public Swim Hours, Dec 21 – Jan 4; WEEKDAYS: 1:30-9:00 pm;
How much: $6 per person; $3 for supervising adults; $4 per person on Thursdays.
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: Burn off some of that energy at the Indoor Aquatic Center! For more on the Indoor Aquatic Center, click here.

What:  Kirby Winter Wellness Walk 
Where: Allerton Park and Retreat Center
When:  Tues.- Sat., 5:00-8:00 p.m., until January 5. 
How much:
 FREE, donations appreciated.
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go:  There’s still time to take in some holiday lights!Experience Allerton after dark! See Allerton in a new light as you enjoy an enchanting stroll of lights from the Mansion parking lot through the Gardens to the Visitor Center.  For the Top Five Things to Do at Allerton Park with Kids, click here.

What:  Meet the Critters 

Where: Homer Lake Interpretive Center, Homer Lake Forest Preserve, Homer
When: Friday, Jan. 4, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
How much: FREE
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: Come in from the cold before the kids head back to school, and enjoy meeting our resident reptiles up close! Meet the turtles and the snake of the Interpretive Center up close and learn about what makes them special creatures. What: Illini Farm Toy Show
Where: Garden Inn, Urbana
When: Friday, Jan. 4, 3:00-7:00 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
How much:  Adults $3; Children (6-12) $2; under age 6 FREE
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: If your kids enjoy playing with farm toys, this is the place to be. There will be lots of collectibles and toys for sale, along with plenty of toys to play with and learning experiences about food and agriculture.  The kids scavenger hunts look especially fun.

What: Build It!  
Where: Champaign Public Library
When:
Saturday, Jan. 5, 3:00-3:45 p.m. 
How much: FREE
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: Unleash your imagination at build it! Kids are invited to create igloos, skyscrapers, and anything else they can dream up using all kinds of building materials. For more family fun at the Champaign Public Library, click here.

What: Drag Queen Story Hour 
Where: Urbana Free Library
When: Sunday, Jan. 6, 3:00 -4:00 p.m.
How much: FREE
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: Drag Queen Story Hour returns! This fun and fabulous all-ages event features local drag queens reading children’s stories and doing crafts. Expect sparkles, glamorous dress-up, and a friendly atmosphere. For more family fun at the Urbana Free Library, click here.
