Looking for free activities, books, and movies? The Champaign Public Library, our Weekend Planner sponsor, offers remarkable resources for families, including two new “Getting Ready to Read” activities for preschoolers: Make & Take on Thursdays and Play Date on Fridays, 10–11 a.m.
You won’t want to miss meeting Mr. Lincoln, aka history buff and impersonator Kevin Wood, at A Visit with Mr. Lincoln (Sat., 3 p.m.).
Stop by Sunday to celebrate the Opening Reception for “The Art Connection” (3–4 p.m.) with 40+ student artists from Champaign schools: Bottenfield, Westview, and Central. If you like listening to live music, drop in a little earlier (2 p.m.) to hear the breezy pop sounds of local duo Kittens Incorporated.

Where: Prairie Park, Argenta
When: Saturday, Feb. 11, 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
How much: Free, some activities ticketed, food and merchandise for sale.
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: A new winter festival in Central Illinois? Yes, please. The Icefest promises to include: ice sculptures by Olympic Gold Medalist Aaric Kendall, live demonstrations, interactive ice play, musical entertainment, and warming stations. Live ice carving demonstrations are scheduled throughout the day.
What: Collegiate Judo Championships
Where: Savoy Recreation Center
When: Saturday, Feb. 11, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
How much: FREE
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: The 2017 Midwest Collegiate Judo Championships will be held for the first time in Champaign County. Hosted by Kokushi Midwest Judo, the event will bring competitors from all over the Midwest to the Savoy Recreation Center. Opening ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. with the University of Illinois Jazz Trombone Ensemble playing the national anthem, and competition beginning at 11:00 a.m.
What: Fairy Tale Ball
Where: Tuscola Community Building, Tuscola
When: Saturday, Feb. 11, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
How much: FREE
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: For fairy tale dress up fun with stories, crafts, jousting, and wand-making, Enjoy cookies, drinks, dancing, and all the other fairy tale fun to be had. Dress up as your favorite fairy tale character: a princess, knight, Tinker Bell, a dragon, Elsa, or whomever you wish!
What: Valentine Make ‘n Take at the I.D.E.A. Store

How much: $5 per person. Participants under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult, and ages 2 and under are free.

Why you should go: Valentines don’t have to be just cards, candy and flowers. There are many creative (reuse) ways to show your loved ones you care, and for $5, you can enjoy an afternoon of creative craft-making at the I.D.E.A. Store.
What: One Love: A Valentine Card-Making Party for All Ages

Why you should go: Show some love to family and friends with a homemade Valentine’s card. We’ll have creative ideas and lots of crafty materials to get you started, and a chocolate treat to keep you smiling.

Why you should go: Enjoy a taste of summer in the heart of winter with the breezy pop sounds of Champaign’s Kittens Incorporated, featuring local musicians Bryan and Jolee Phelps. The duo will play selections from their 2016 album, “Like a Bubble,” as well as other favorites.
